The Association of Radical Midwives was formed by a group of student midwives in 1976 who were concerned about the growing medicalisation of childbirth which was particularly expressed in induction of labour preceded by ARM or Articial Rupture of Membranes.

 

The word "radical" was used in the sense of "radix" (Lat. root) to express a belief I the need to return to fundamentals values and practice of midwifery. ARM has led campaigns on education, supervision and caseload midwifery and founded MIDIRS. We offer a safe and supportive forum to provide information and support to midwives and parents to enable women focused care, The recommendations of the ARM "New Vision for Midwifery Care" (2012) were expressed In the "Better Births" document published by government in 2016.
